Let’s dive into the history of Artificial Intelligence…
Artificial Intelligence- History
Artificial Intelligence is a great concept that has ever invented in the world until now. The history of Artificial Intelligence goes to 1951. Many years ago, people wanted to create something stronger, smarter, faster, and wise than us. As a consequence of that, Artificial Intelligence has come over suddenly. It has a long history in the way of inventing Artificial Intelligence. This concept of Artificial Intelligence was officially created in 1956 at a conference in Dartmouth, which was the first step to Artificial Intelligence. Before that, in 1951, Marvin Minsky and Dean Edmunds built the first artificial neural network using 3000 vacuum tubes simulating 40 neurons. Then in 1952, Arthur Samuel(IBM) wrote the first machine learning program for checkers. Then Artificial Intelligence is found as an academic discipline by John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky. John McCarthy is the main person of the history of Artificial Intelligence
People could see the first golden years of AI from 1956 to 1974. Afterward, people were so curious, and they wanted to create this somehow. Therefore, they started to do experiments in schools and laboratories to achieve their goal because they were obsessed with Artificial Intelligence. In 1957 Frank Rosenblatt developed the Perceptron, an early artificial neural network enabling pattern recognition based on a two-layer computer learning network. After all, Joseph Weizenbaum developed ELIZA, an early natural language program, in 1965. After 3 years of space, Odessey created a sentient AI agent: HAL9000. While they were in action, they thought that this is pointless and we would never be able to create something as per our wish because it was costly and it was getting much time. They were so disappointed because they couldn’t make that much progress, but they never gave up.
After some years, we could see a silver light in the dark from 1980 to 1987. WABOTs and 5th generation computer projects are launched during this period. Eventually, Rollo Carpenter developed the chat-bot Jabberwacky to simulate natural human chat. After the “If/Then” logic is found, you get some response if you give it some input. This was the turning point of AI. Yann LeCun applied a backpropagation algorithm to create Convolutional Neuro Network(CNN), a multilayer neural network, in 1989. As a huge success of AI, in 1997, Deep Blue became the first computer chess-playing system to challenge Garry Kasparov, who had known as a world chess champion.
Finally, In the 21st century, cheaper, faster, and advanced computers, which give access to a large amount of data invented. In 2014 one of the massive dreams came true despite all difficulties. That is Google’s driverless car pass Nevada’s self-driving test. After then Amazon released Echo, “ALEXA,” which uses a voice assistant. Now we are enjoying the great results of ancestor’s dedications use to develop the AI. Actually, when we look at past decades’ evolution of Artificial Intelligence, we can’t imagine how the world will be in the future.
Stages of Artificial Intelligence
AI has 3 different types of stages. So under the stages of Artificial Intelligence we have,
1. Artificial Narrow Intelligence(ANI)
Artificial Narrow Intelligence is call as weak AI. ANI is the stage of Artificial Intelligence involving machines that can perform only a narrowly defined set of specific tasks. At this stage, machines don’t possess any thinking ability. This is to perform a set of free-defined functions.
E.g., Siri, ALEXA, Self-driving car
2. Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)
Artificial General Intelligence is calling strong Artificial Intelligence. AGI is the stage in the evolution of Artificial Intelligence wherein machines will possess the ability to think and make decisions like humans. Currently, these kinds of machines are not existing, but they hope they will make such machines in the future. However, they predict these kinds of machines will be a threat to human beings. The great scientist Stephen Hawking also said that full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.
3. Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI)
ASI is the stage of Artificial Intelligence when the capability of computers will surpass human beings. Artificial Super Intelligence is calling as a hypothetical situation in movies and scientific books.
